Training Your Taste Buds

While you may be used to foods being salty, sweet, or fatty, and can’t imagine cutting back on any of these tastes, interestingly, it is possible.  Just do it slowly and consider trying the following:

Instead of eating sweetened yogurt, take lowfat or nonfat Greek-style yogurt and add your own fruit puree.

    and

When seasoning with salt, cut back on what the recipe recommends and then double the amount of herbs and spices.

    and

Even fat can be reduced without you really noticing it.  In fact, once you start to decrease the amount of fat you eat, anything that is overly fatty will be distasteful.  The dairy industry has been very helpful in providing lower fat options.  Replace full-fat cream cheese with neufchatel.  Try low-fat or non-fat yogurt or milk.  When it comes to meat, you can cut off the fat after you’ve cooked it.  (Keeping the fat during cooking keeps the meat more juicy.)  Select cuts that are naturally less fatty.  For example, instead of chicken thighs or legs, select the breast meat.

If none of the above work for you, then your next best option is to eat less of whatever it is.
